Peruvian novelist Mario Vargas Llosa won the Nobel Prize for Literature for, in the words of the Swedish Academy, “ his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual’s resistance, revolt, and defeat.” Vargas Llosa is the author of many novels as well as nonfiction, and has been a candidate for president of Peru.
Howard Jacobson, 68, won the 2010 Man Booker Prize for his eleventh novel, "The Finkler Question." Julian Barnes, Carol Birch, Patrick deWitt, Esi Edugyan, Stephen Kelman and A.D. Miller have been announced as the six shortlisted authors for the 2011 Man Booker Prize for Fiction.
